ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – A nationally recognized golf expert, based in St. Petersburg, is urging all golfers to visit a certified golf club fitting expert before purchasing a new set of clubs this holiday season.

“It’s a common misnomer that custom-fitted clubs are more expensive than out-of-the-box clubs,” said Bob VanSweden, a highly awarded club-fitting expert and owner of the Golf Repair Center in St. Petersburg. “While there is a small charge for the fitting initially, golfers have 30 days to purchase their new set of clubs from our shop to have half of that fee waved.”

The Golf Repair Center uses the latest in technology, including a 3D Doppler radar monitor to track a golfer’s swing to ensure they’re getting the right set of clubs. Custom clubs are still name-brand, but include proper grip size, length adjustment, loft and lie customization and shafts built to your swing speed.

According to a recent study performed by the Sports and Leisure Research Group, as many as 90 percent of golfers are currently playing with the wrong equipment. Additionally in the study, golfers who used custom fit golf clubs hit the ball 80 percent more accurately and consistently. The survey sample consisted of nearly 6,000 avid golfers across the country.

“This study is a wake-up call for every golfer who wants to get better. We spoke to thousands of golfers coast to coast and the majority had no idea of what true custom fitting is all about and how it can shave strokes off of score cards,” said Jon Last, President of Sports and Leisure Research Group.

In addition to receiving numerous awards and serving on multiple pro-tour fitting vans, VanSweden has fitted dozens of pro-golfers, athletes and celebrities, including John Daly, Brittany Lincicome and Jenny Gleason.
